Oysters: A natural filtration system

Oysters are more than a food source and pearl creators. Oysters are necessary to keep our oceans clean. A single oyster is able to filter up to 50 pounds of water through its gills every day, removing algae, plankton, and other particles from the water.

Oysters are sedentary, which means that they don't move. After floating around as larvae as babies, they attach to a hard surface where they will remain for the rest of their lives. Oysters attract one another and accumulate and form oyster reefs. These reefs provide shelter for marine life and help our coastal communities by creating natural seawalls to protect our shores from erosion and flooding.

A healthy oyster population is a critical component to ocean health. Do your part to recycle, reduce the use of fossil fuels, and protect our environment to support the sustainability of oyster reefs.
